Statement of purpose

DPhil student position at the ------------------------------

The living body has always been a fascination to me. When I was a little girl I use to spend hours looking at the ants on my stairs trying to figure out how do they communicate, where does their brain fit, how can they carry all that weight...? Later my intriguery shifted to the human body. I wanted to know how do we function. Health problems in my family and seeing a lot of people being injured and chronically disabled in the war in my country played a major role in my determination. It made me want to help others stop suffering. Choosing physical therapy seemed like a good choice because it provided an opportunity to use different means to help body heal and regain its normal function.

At the Medical School, ----------------------------I was thirsty for knowledge and always exploring new and alternative applications in physical therapy. From using sEmg biofeedback in rehabilitation to the influence of different nutritional supplements on the healing process. I managed to finish undergraduate studies first and as a second best student on the course.

The highlight of my undergraduate years was a simple "ideas-on-improving-the-healthcare" themed coursework where I had developed an fall prevention program for the elderly. My program later became a part of ----------National Strategy of Healthcare Development 2006-2011, and was published and presented the on --------------- Congress with international attendance in 2006.

Unfortunately, country----- did not have any postgraduate study options for physiotherapists, nor it had research opportunities in this field. In spite of my family's poor financial situation, I was determined to continue further studies. So, I became the only physiotherapist in country----- I heard of to have continued to postgraduate studies abroad. I worked as a physiotherapist in an private clinic in country----- , and to be able to pay the first year of the MSc course, took a maximum loan in the bank for three years. The second year of my studies was financed by country----- Ministry of Science, Education and Sport. That was the only scholarship option for postgraduate students of my type studying abroad, and the fund is primarily for university assistants. It was an achievement to win this, as it is extremely competitive.

At the MSc ------------course at the University of-------------- and under the guidance of Dr. ------------ and Dr. -------------, I was introduced to more quantitative, multidisciplinary approach and different problem solving methods. I was so enthusiastic, that my first core --------- paper was rated with unprecedented 100%.

During the studies, the internship in the hospital and work in an private clinic I got to work close with patients suffering from different health conditions. This valuable experience helped me to learn the importance of clinical practise and have introduced to me the uniqueness of each human being. I tended to spend most of my time providing orthopaedic rehabilitation, where I got the chance to integrate biomechanics principles to the rehabilitation process.

My main interests are based on biomechanics of human motion, control and rehabilitation. Gait analysis and exploring different aspects of trauma rehabilitation and prevention are the areas I am interested in. I believe that there is a lot of research in that field to be done, and a lot of solutions on improving life quality for orthopaedic patients waiting to be discovered.

Once I read somewhere that everything in life is possible if you believe. When something seemed difficult or impossible I would remember that statement. I love asking questions, and even more like answering them. Advances and applications of science intrigue and fascinate me. Life situations had made me into a hard worker and a fast learner. A career in the research is where I see myself and I had spent most of my life preparing for it.

Best regards,
