Please help me with my rewriting exercise!

My English teacher gave us 80 sentences to rewrite this morning and we must finish them in a day. I've finished most of them, but there are some sentences which are so difficult. Can you please help me? (I think this is a grammar exercise so I post this thread here Emotion: smile ).

1. You can't compare tabloids with quality newspapers. (rewrite with "fish")
2. I owe three weeks' rent. (behind)
3. On my birthday I had only my cat for company. (own)
4. I find Harold's behaviour quite incomprehensible. (loss)
5. The incident ruined my chances of promotion. (paid)
6. They wouldn't let the former chairman attend the conference. (barred)

Thank you so much! Emotion: wink

Sorry, but you'll have to at least make an attempt yourself; then we will check your efforts. The rewrites desired all include idiomatic expressions. However, I see no way of using 'fish' in #1; perhaps 'apples and oranges' is intended.

For 6 out of 80, I'll give it a start and you can finish the sentences. Next time please suggest your own answers. This seems to be a vocabulary exercise with idioms and new words. Did your teacher give you a list of idioms to learn?

Well, it looks like AS has already done your work for you, though I rather think #3 should include 'on one's own' and #5 should incorporate 'put paid'.

Thank you! Can you check these sentences please! I'm not sure about them.

Hi,

Not fish stories.

Fishy stories ('fishy' means suspicious, probably not true).

Oh no! We can't change forms of the words provided! It's a rule of rewriting exercises!
I know only on structure with "fish": "feel like a fish out of water"!

Hi again,

All kinds of newpapers, not just tabloids, contain stories about fish.

Please let us know what your teacher gives you as the answer for that rewrite.

I think the idiomatic expression in #1 is a different kettle of fish, although I'm not quite clear how to rewrite it ... Maybe "Tabloids and quality newspapers are different kettles of fish"?

Could it be?
