I'm a student from Poland and this year I would like to apply for a place at an english university. I have to write a personal statement but I dont know if I did it right and since none of my teachers is able to help my I thought that someone here could give me a hand. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions. Here it goes (by the way Im applying for a place at modern languages course):
I want to study foreign languages because I have always found them fascinating and I really like learning them. Knowledge of three foreign language: English, German and French clearly proves it. I also think that in modern world, when people migrate and cultures mix languages are very important because they help to understand other cultures. I also admire the people who mastered many foreign languages and I would also like to be like them one day. I am very interested in courses that offer a year abroad because I think that it is the best way to learn foreign languages.
And why I would like to study in the United Kingdom? Well, first of all studying in the United Kingdom will enable me to develop my English skills. It will be also a good experience that will help me to become independent and more self – confident. Additionally, English universities are among the world’s best universities and I am sure that they will provide me excellent education. Finally, I think it will be fantastic adventure. I will be able to learn more English culture and lifestyle which I come to like during the exchange with British students in which I took part.
I have good background for studying foreign languages. At school I learn English and German and I am at the top of the group in both of these subjects. After school I take classes in French and I am able to communicate in this language fluently. Last year I took part in exchange with students from organized as a part of the Socrates programme. I did not have any problems communicating and living with my host family. This year I took part in national English contest competition called “Olimpiada j. angielskiego” and in my school I was among the leaders in it. I got in to the second stage which means I will represent my school. In my school every year there is organized a week during which students present other cultures and languages. It is a part of the UNESCO programme in my school and I always took an active part in it.
I think I am suitable person for studying foreign languages. I am really good at learning languages and it comes easily to me. I have good memory for foreign vocabulary. I also have the courage to speak in the foreign language which I think is very important in this subject because knowing vast vocabulary has no use if you are not able to use it. And finally I simply like learning languages. Since I like reading I find it very enjoyable to read books in their original version.
After finishing my course I would like to either go to to be a language teacher or take up a job of a translator. The plan to go to may seem strange but I am very fascinated by its culture that is why I would like to go and work there.
Besides Japanese culture I also like to read books. I read great amounts of them and I do not care about the literary genres because I enjoy reading everything from science – fiction to the classics. Knowing a couple of foreign languages helps me in my passion for reading because if I really want to read a foreign author’s book I usually do not have to wait for the Polish edition. I just read it in one of the languages I know. I also regularly go in for sport. I especially enjoy Winter sports such as ice – skating and skiing.
