The educational opportunities that I had taken advantage of in school are Math and English. By taking those two subjects throughout my life, they can help with various things both in life and school. English helps me with vocabularies which allow me to have conversations with people with different ideology and ideas. English is known as the international language since most countries now implement English into their everyday life. Furthermore, Mathematic allows the human mind to expand and fasten the thinking process in ones mind. Mathematic is the one subject that shines through all the other subjects in school, it is this reason that interest me into the field of computer programming and engineering. Computer programming requires the knowledge and expansion of the mind to identify and exercise the different computation of variables that is very similar to mathematic equations. With my interest in mathematic, there are different branches in which I can apply that interest to life and nurture society. After expanding my knowledge of mathematic, I can either go into the field of computer, or sign a contract with the NAVY to work as a computer programmer and engage in the field of communication.
A contribution that I can bring to the is leadership. I can patiently wait for others and calm myself in different situations. By handling things in a calm and peaceful way, I can solve different problems faster and with more precision. I have shown leadership in church activities and school projects. I have taken the initiative and lead a project in which I have offered my time and energy to help other people. In English class, I appointed myself as leader and started on the poster that was a class assignment, this encourage those who are around me to start doing their work instead of socializing. In addition to school projects, I have been the President of my youth group at to serve God and other members of the church. Putting together Christmas parties and participates in the Thanksgiving parties for the youth group enlightens my heart. Church activities are a good way to show understanding and concerns toward the elderly in the Wesley Terrace. For example, Christmas caroling is held each year by the youth group at church to entertain those who lack the ability to travel outside of their home. Through these activities, the older kids can influence the younger kids and they then can carry on with the activities themselves in the future. Time is the one thing that cannot be waste; therefore, sacrificing it to help the younger generation is the most resourceful thing that I can think of to contribute to society. Another moment that I show leadership in is when the different level of groups in church meet up to discuss about Father’s Day and Mother’s Day last year. I volunteer my youth group to dress up and pass out the presents and flowers to the parents during those days in appreciation of their love and dedication to their children. Through the youth group’s events and services, it influenced the community in multiple ways. We sometime do a Trash Walk in which we clean up our community and in the process show God’s love through our action. Community services are also available to those who are willing to do them for college applications, however, most of the times those services are just for us to demonstrate our love for the community. I confess that sometimes being a leader can be very stressful and will require a lot of dedications. Not all those activities in church are entertaining and fun like the ones mentioned above. For instance, the youth group holds a picnic at one of the advisor’s house; the result was catastrophic due to poor planning on the leaders’ part. That was the time that the leaders, including me, learn from our mistakes and fixes them. Although a leader can sometime lose their temper and stresses out, but the reward of seeing people succeed because of your leadership can be quite comforting. The joy of seeing people succeed and triumph over hardship is a wondrous thing, like seeing a disable person work their hardest and try to restore strength to their leg, or students who try their hardest to enter a university to accomplish a goal that they have set out ever since they found an appealing subject. After all these different obstacles for leaders, I understand the reason of hardworking and dedications. I must admit that I lost my dedication after some failures of the events that we host, but through God and friends, I was able to overcome that feeling and strive for success in the midst of failures.
The academic record is one thing, but there are things in life that are not written on paper, like volunteer works that is not official. I volunteered to help private tutors in hope of working with children and seeing them understand their materials. These “off the record” jobs are most important to me since I am part in some of these children’s future. By helping these children, I am able to review the materials that I learned in school and at the same time, learn new method of obtaining certain answers. I also learn to think outside of the box to find different ways to teach these children, certain techniques work for some and not for others. Having an insight on teaching has helped me find the inspiration to keep working hard and learn all I can. While tutoring the children, I also met with some parents that know very little about certain subjects, it is not their fault. There are parents who gave up their life just for the joy and success of their children, which shows love and sympathy from the parents toward their children. Since the parents gave up their life for their children, the least I can do is sacrifice some of my time to help these children achieve something meaningful in life.
