Below is my motivation letter for master study in the field of economics. Any suggestion or modification from you guy will be of great help for me.
Your help will be appreciated greatly.Dear Goethe University admission committee,
I am writing to you with my most delighted enthusiasm about your Master of Science in International Economics and Economy Policy program. I am strongly convinced your program is the perfect preparation for my future goal of a researcher/professor in development economics.
To start with, I am a senior at Finance and Accounting at Vietnamese-German University (VGU). All programs at VGU are coordinated by German universities to give role models of modern higher education for other Vietnamese universities. I had the privilege to study with German professors from Goethe University and was greatly impressed by well-organized structure, thought-provoking materials, and dedicated professors. Courses are taught with research orientation, giving me intellectual satisfaction of learning about greatest minds in human history. I have chance to learn stories how innovative ideas are developed and changed the world into a better place. It is a distinct pleasure that I have never had before university. With that pleasure, I took the opportunity at VGU seriously to develop a well-rounded knowledge indicated by a solid GPA of 1.87 in German scale. I feel determined to join the ranks of development economics researchers to help come up with the next Solow-Swan or Lewis Dual sector model.
My bachelor program grants me not only access to international academic world but also an ideal environment to gain practical insight into both researching and professional careers. For example, Bachelors meet Business (BmB) program conducted by Dr. Myriam Hadnes gave me knowledge about how international companies work through visits and experience sharing with figures from industries. I even was presentative for VGU to give presentation about Mercedes-Benz Vietnam in our visit to the company and eventually led me to an intern position at their finance department. Moreover, I also took part in the research “Migration and development in Vietnam 2013” by Mr. André Gröger, PhD student at Goethe University. The research objective is to study how the economic recession of 2008 affect migrants’ decisions and their families. I had to grasp basic concepts and requirements of the research quickly in 1 week to carry out data collection for over 4 months. Thanks to my quick learning ability, I did not only fulfill my assigned tasks but also acted as technical advisor for the research team on Epidata when there is no expert available. From this valuable opportunity, I learnt significantly about scientific research with interesting real life experience, and from constructive debates with members of the team. At VGU, my creativity, originality, leadership skill and social awareness are well-developed through various student activities where I usually take the leading role. For example, I initiated and co-founded “Presto”, one of the first and most prestigious student association at VGU, serving as an integral part of university student life. We are organizers of VGU’s annual events such as VGU Football Cup, VGU Orientation Day, VGU’s got Talent, Mr. VGU and VGU Bloodrive to encourage confidence, self-development awareness, and social engagement.
Born and raised in a war-torn country trying to catch up with the world, I have been experiencing the dynamics of economic development and international integration since the first moment of my life. It is still a long way for Vietnam to go, and it is not an easy one where economic convergence can be taken for granted. Middle income trap, political instability, economic recession prevent developing countries from achieving the development miracle of Korea and Japan. To overcome these difficulties, good policy for economic development and international integration is the key. As my future goal is academic career in development economics, Master of Science in International Economics and Economy Policy program at Goethe University is the ideal next step. This is where I can gain further knowledge in the field of micro- and macroeconomics as well as international economics and policy making. With this program, I can also turn my good innate numerical ability, which helped me score 90% percentile on GRE quantitative reasoning test, to crucial mathematical skills for PhD study through advanced mathematics, statistics and econometrics courses.
To summarize, I strongly believe I am one of the strongest candidates for your program. I am sure to deliver performance, exceed expectations and contribute greatly to the international aspects of your program with my unique background.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to joining your program.
Yours sincerely,
Khai Cao Nguyen
