The diagram below shows how the Australian Bureau of Meteorology collects up-to-the-minute information on the weather in order to produce reliable forecasts.

The picture illustrates the process of collecting detailed weather information and producing reliable forecasts carried out by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

As can be seen clearly, there are four distinct stages in this process, beginning with the collection of incoming information and ending at the broadcasting stage.

The first step in making a weather forecast is that meteorological data is collected from three observation tools called satellite, radar, and drifting buoy. This information is then promptly analyzed in three different ways with the satellite data being processed and described as satellite photos. The identical data is also used for analysis and displayed on a radar screen together with information received from weather radars. All statistics which are provided by the three mentioned devices are shown on a synoptic chart.

Stages three and four of the process both involve broadcasting. The analyzed data is gathered on a computer in preparation for the final step. The weather forecasts are widely broadcast on several facilities such as TV, radio, and recorded telephone.
