Overall, sales of both products increased in the four countries over the period. The exceptions were the sales of bananas in Sweden and Denmark, which decreased slightly. The UK had the largest increase in sales, which is also the dominant consumer, except for 1999, when it spent less money compared to Switzerland on coffee.
These countries paid a total of 8.1 ME for coffee and 20.4 ME for bananas, and this had approximately tripled to 30.7 and 58.4 ME in 2004, respectively. Most of that increase came from the UK, rising by 18.5 and 32 ME, to end at 20 and 47 ME in 2004, respectively. While spending on bananas decreased by 0.8 ME in Belgium and 1.1 ME in Sweden, that of the other countries for both products rose. However, the growth for coffee sales was less than for bananas, 3 versus 4.5 in Switzerland and 0.2 versus 3.4 in Denmark.
