My essay:
The process flow chart illustrates the ways in which yarn is made from sheep’s wool.
Overall, sheep is a domesticated ruminant animal with a thick woolly coat. People used the wool to make yarn, which is the material for fabric products, such as clothes, carpets and furniture. There are two major stages in the process, preparing the wool and converting these into yarn.
In detail, the first stage begins with a manual process, in which sheep are sheared to remove their fleece. Then the fleece is graded and sorted by colours, and then assembled and delivered to a manufacturing facility. However, the wool is greasy and contains dirt and residue, such as suint, vegetable matter (bums, seeds, twigs and straw) and lanolin wax. To remove these unwanted materials, the fleece is washed thoroughly in water and scoured. Then the cleaned fleece is put through a carder, which combs loose wool fiber into sheets. These sheets are twisted and stretched into long, thin strands of yarn, and wounded onto spools to form balls of yarn. In the final stage, colourant is added, making yarn of different shades, which can be used to make fabric products.
