Q: Some people say that arts subjects such as painting, or drawing should not be made compulsory for high school students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Criticised by many naysayers that should be optional subjects, art-related subjects, are embraced by many people that are necessary in high school curriculum. Although the former perspective seems to be justified, I subscribe to the latter viewpoint.
It is admitted that learning art subjects in the light of academic achievement for those who have little passion or interest in these subjects is a suffering rather than a pleasurable experience. However, due to the dominance of using logical subjects such as Maths and Chemistry, many high school students nowadays are forced to spend all of their time on those by their own parents. For instance, in Vietnam, all the “ top class” universities required extremely high grades of the entrance exams which involved Maths or science-related subjects. As a result, art-related subjects need to be compulsory in high school curriculum to guarantee that students are sufficient of creativity and strength, which are absent in other subjects.
I believe that art subjects not only nurture fertile imagination but also help students to destress and improve concentration. Firstly, they boost students' creativity, therefore, students are used to having different perspectives or solutions when they encounter different problems in life. For example, acting requires students to have a deep understanding about thoughts and feelings in many different circumstances. So that, students would have a higher EQ, which plays a seminal role in their adulthood. Secondly, singing, dancing or painting could help students reduce stress after hardworking time in academics. Studies have indicated that listening to music is an effective way to relieve stress and increase energy for both body and mind. Consequently, students would have more energy to highly concentrate on their other important subjects, therefore, have a better performance and result as well.
In conclusion, because of its boons such as mentality and creativity, art-related subjects, should be mandatory in high school curriculum though they are not as important as others in further tertiary education.
