The ethical problem of the food industry

Nowadays food has become much more than a way of survive, today it is a way of pleasure and if "we don’t like it - we won't eat it", the food industry know it so they provide the customer what he wants, the customer like it and the food company also profited because in this way they make their money.

So what is the problem?

The problems start at the long run, when we eat all this junk food its start to take effect, people are getting fat and develop all kind of diseases,

So whose fault it is?

People need to eat, but they also want to enjoy it and this is exactly what the fast food industry supplies them: chip, fast, tasty meal and very close to your home, but what about your health? As long as you wont demand health they wont supply you any.

The problem start at us, any one of our society, we look only at the short run, fast food is tasty now but healthy food will keep me healthy for the long run. the fast food is something that I'm really enjoy from but the healthy food is something that might prevent me from getting diseases at the future, but who said that I will live at the future?, this is the thinking way of typical person in our society. Until we won't raise the level of people self-awareness we won't see any changes from this side.

We can also blame the food industry itself for putting the profit as first target while running all over any ethical morale. At the last 3 years we saw few changes from the fast food industry, the changes happen because of few lawsuit from few children that sue the McDonald Company for getting them fat and cause them heart diseases, the companies start to realize that they must make some changes before they damage their profit.

The fast food companies changed their strategy to an all new different level - they start to sell healthy food. The changes came in few steps, its began when the fast food companies agree to publish and reveal what their food contains, how much fat he got and what is the amount of the calorie he worth, the next step was when the companies start to offer their clients salad as substitute to a meal (instead of unhealthy hamburger), few month later a local newspaper discover that their salad have the same amount of calories as their hamburger, so the company make some changes at the salad to make him more healthful, the next step was to try to make an unhealthy food to be less harmful, they start to use a better oil for the fries and the hamburger, they also start to sell hamburger with less percent of fat. Nowadays we can see the last step; the fast food companies ran a few education projects to teach us how to be healthier.

All of these changes happen just because the people start to demand these changes and the companies know that if they won't supply this demands, their customers will start to look for healthy food in another places and this move will damage the profit of the fast food companies.

People health is also concern for the government, our country is obliged to our health and if they recognize a company that makes damage at the population, it is their duty to stop it, but what kind of damage you can include in the government commitment? Are we talking about the different between the long run and the short run? It doesn’t seem that way in air pollution dilemma, we can see that when the government recognize a factory that cause an air pollution (that is bad for the long run), they stop the factory from keep working. So what make a problem so that the government need to interfere?, I think that the only thing that make things happen is us, if the government see that the public show interest they will take an action but if we won't care about our health problems at the long run, the government don’t have any reason to help us.
<>The government policy to food industry changes from country to country and depends especially at the public concern, we can see that in Israel every fast food restaurant must show the customer all of the components that the food is contain but still they can sell any harmful food that they want. There are few countries that their government starts to prevent selling any kind of unhealthy meal and demand the fast food companies to reduce the fat level of their food to minimum.
Many researches show that the consumers priority at the food areas is given to taste, health is been consider only at 37% of the responders, this result can explain the reason for the problem, tasty food is usually not healthy one, and if we want to make it healthy we will have to compromise on the taste and this is something that the typical consumer find it very hard to do.

I think that with a lot of goodwill we can change things; we can start by refuse eating all the junk food that the fast food industries offer. After that I suggest to start influence our friends and family by explain them why it's so important to eat nutrient food.

In our world we have many kinds of different food and the food industry make all the effort to seduce us to eat it, we tempted to try it and eat it on regular base even if it's harmful, some of us already start to realize the long run effect and start to make some changes in their eating habit. The demand for changes must come from our side, the consumer side, and then it will affect the food industry and our government policy.
