Writing Task 2 - Test 2 - Academic Writing for IELTS by Sam McCarter

Human activities depend much on the natural reserves of oil and gas which will run out one day in the future. That addresses the need for alternative sources such as power from the sun, wind, water and heat from burning waste. These types of energy are said to cause as much environmental problems as the fossil fuels do. In my opinion, the benefits that this replacement brings could outweigh its possible damage and become a good solution to the world’s energy supply.

To begin with, renewable energy could help to reduce global warming. The daily use of fossil fuels releases a great amount of emissions into the atmosphere. Some chemicals from this process, especially carbon dioxide and methane are very detrimental to the environment. For example, running cars produces a lot of CO2 which is the main cause to the greenhouse effect. It leads to the heat increase on our earth and other significant effects such as rising sea level and extreme weather. However, most available powers as wind or water are found to emit little to no harmful pollutants and often referred as “clean energy”. A study by the US Department of National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that about 81% of emissions could be decreased by generating electricity from renewable sources. They would enable us to replace carbon-intensive energy and consequently lessen the environmental problems.

Other advantages of renewable energy are its stability and reliability. These sources can be available for almost all the time because they come from the sun heat, hydro power and wind power. This energy supply is inexhaustible that provides us with enough power to use in a massive amount and for a lasting period of time. Also, the power systems generated by the alternative sources would operate reliably with more resilience than fossil fuels and nuclear power in unfavorable conditions. They might be either failure of the equipment or severe weather. Real events have shown that renewable energy systems suffered from less damage and disruption than that run by fossil fuels after a hurricane.

In conclusion, it is clear that renewable resources would be a beneficial replacement for the fossil fuels and nuclear power. Compared with the use of natural oil and gases, power from the sun, wind or water undeniably have more positive impacts on the global energy industry.
