Today’s children are living under more pressure than children in the past. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is argued that nowadays children are coping with more pressure than former children. Personally, I totally concur with this because today’s children have to suffer from academic stress and social media pressure that never happened to children previously.
To begin with, children now are living under academic pressure. With social development, the job market is becoming more and more competitive. Parents want their kids to have a wealthy and stable life so they make them learn hard and have extra classes in the evening. Consequently, children do not have adequate time to relax, instead, they just have their noses in their books all the time and try to do their best to satisfy their parents. This puts them under pressure and makes them feel stressed if they do not get desirable results. In a recent poor case of a student at Amsterdam High School for the gifted in Hanoi, Vietnam, he committed suicide to escape the pressure that his parents put on him by jumping into the ground from a high flat. This demonstrates how devastatingly and seriously academic pressure affects children today.
On top of that, with technology development, social media is becoming prevalent, allowing for social media pressure among youngsters. Having a large number of Facebook friends, young people often get jealous of other ‘perfect’ lives and perfect bodies that they see on other posts and feel stressed when trying to manufacture the content on their posts to what will be most liked and accepted by others. As a result, they adjust their personality, lifestyles, and appearance to think, act, look and speak like highly rewarded individuals on social media. This lead to unhealthy thought and behaviors. More importantly, it isolates them from their truly personal interactions and makes them get addicted to the virtual world.
To sum up, I completely agree that today’s children are under more pressure than children in the past because now they have to face academic pressure and social media pressure that previous children did not have.
