Education should be accessible to people of all economic backgrounds. All levels of education, from primary school to tertiary education should be free.

To what extent do you agree?

Some people advocate governments should provide free education irrespective of the level so that individuals of every financial status can access it. I completely agree.

Families with such a low income that struggle to satisfy their basic needs exist in every country. If their governments charge a fee for education, they are likely to be unable to go to school. Without primary education, they will end up being illiterate and poor numerate, therefore having problems doing basic daily life activities such as shopping, gaining information by reading, or communicating through writing. Furthermore, their employability prospects will greatly suffer as most employers nowadays prefer applicants who have a matric certificate. Consequently, they will be subjected to jobs with minimum income just enough for subsistence. In addition, lacking an academic degree closes the door to most high-paying careers with a good working environment. Hence, educational fees can lead to a never-ending cycle of poverty amongst the impoverished people of society.

However, to escape poverty, those who are poor due to the lack of education may choose to commit a crime, especially property-related. Also, children who cannot go to school because of their parents’ inability to pay for education fees are even more susceptible to going down the wrong path since they stay at home without their parents' supervision. Therefore, free education can keep children off the streets and reduce crime rates, promoting a harmonious and safe society. Furthermore, schools equip students with necessary life knowledge and skills and instill characteristics such as discipline, morality, and ethic. This cultivates them into good citizens, who are committed to their nations’ growth. Thus, providing a free education can be of great benefit to any country regarding security and prosperity.

In conclusion, governments should provide free education so all their citizens can have equal opportunities to maximize their employment prospects and boost their standard of living. In turn, these governments can alleviate poverty and crime, facilitating sustainable development.
