Paying all workers the same salary in a company promotes harmony and respect among colleagues.

Some people think that if companies remunerate their staff the same wage, respectful and harmonious relationships will be created between coworkers. I completely disagree.

First, paying all employees equally can actually cause several drawbacks. First, it would demotivate workers from working hard. In particular, workers would see no reason to work at their optimal level if they receive the same amount of money regardless of their performance. This results in low productivity, therefore loss of profit. Second, it would be difficult to retain certain employees and recruit new ones. To illustrate, in 2020, the CEO of a psychotherapy company called Spill decided to pay every staff a salary of GBP 36,000 a year. After a year, they had to cancel the scheme because they really struggled to attract employees for certain roles that had a higher average pay than GBP 36,000.

Second, it can cause conflicts between staff provided that they all have the same salary. This is because certain career positions have higher responsibilities and duties, and require more difficult knowledge and skills than others. In particular, doctors earn a high salary because they have to be trained for several years in university and face the stress from their great responsibility of saving patients and from the exhaustion of long working hours. Meanwhile, cashiers in the same hospital earn much lower because they only have to know basic math and computer skills and are free from such stress.

In conclusion, paying all workers equally is unfair treatment to those with special expertise and heavy responsibility, and it can lead to lower production and difficulties in attracting and retaining accomplished workers.
