The process diagram illustrates how an integrated gasification combined cycle (IFCC) power plant produces electricity.

Overall, the plant has two different electricity generating processes, one with a steam turbine and the other with a gas turbine. There are four main stages: gasification, gas clean up, heat recovery and steam producing, and generating electricity by the two turbines.

In detail, coal delivered by trucks to the plant is transferred directly into a furnace by a conveyor belt. The furnace is injected with a gasification agent, oxygen, and gasifies the coal into a pressurized gas called syngas. The byproduct from the coal gasification, slag, is discarded. The raw syngas is contaminated with carbon dioxide, mercury and sulfur, so to remove these undesired elements, it goes through a purification process. This ends the preparation of the source for the first generating process. As for the second, its material is the hot waste gases expelled from the gas turbine. A heat recovery steam generator recovers the heat from the exhaust gases in the form of steam. The steam and the cleaned syngas rotates the two turbines, steam and combustion, respectively, producing mechanical (kinetic) energy. Generators convert this energy into electricity, which is fed into a transmission grid.
