Some people think international car-free days are an effective way of reducing air pollution, others think there are some other ways. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer:

It is sometimes argued that universal car–free days help reduce toxic air pollution effectively, whereas some people think that there are some other solutions for contaminated air problem. Personally, I believe that there are several other ways which are no-less-useful in reducing air contamination.

The reason why international car-free days are helpful to minimize air pollution is that car is a major means of transportation used all over the world especially in developed and developing countries. In fact, millions of tones of carbon dioxide and other global-warming gases are generated to the atmosphere by car every year. These harmful gases will contaminate atmosphere, decreasing air quality dramatically. Therefore, using public transportations instead of using car will improve air quality in long-term.

In spite of above argument, I support the view that there are much more effective solutions for air contamination problem than car-free days. Firstly, governments can take drastic measures to protect and improve air quality. For instance, they can totally impose heavy taxes on the vehicle to force people to stop traveling by their personal transports. Secondly, the international enterprise should be encouraged to replace face-to-face meeting by teleconferencing. The fewer flights, the lower the amount of carbon dioxide discharged into the environment. Finally, companies must stop the exploitation of fossil fuel to limit harmful gases emitted to the atmosphere.

In conclusion, although I recognize the good impact of global car-free days on the air quality, I still believe that there are more beneficial ways to reduce air pollution than car-free days.
