The chart compares the percentage of boys and girls who succeeded in completing their high school competency exams between 2010 and 2011.
Overall, students of both sexes performed best in computer science, mathematics and foreign languages, including French, German and Spanish. Besides that, results for females were higher than males on most subjects in the competency exams over the period.
The percentages of the students who passed their high school competency exams were roughly equivalent between boys and girls in terms of mathematics, foreign languages, physics and history. Moreover, history was the most difficult test, with just around 25% of the total doing well.
In other subjects, however, there were some significant differences. Girls achieved by far their best results in computer science, with a pass rate of 56.3%, comparing to 42.1% of boys. The difference was even more marked in Chemistry, the proportion of females doubled that of males. The only subject that boys’ results were better than girls was geography, with 30.4% and 20.1% correspondingly.
