The chart reveals the major causes of worldwide land degradation, and the table gives information on these causes that affected regions in the 1990s.

Overall, Europe suffered more from farmland degradation than other regions, and the main reasons there were deforestation and over-cultivation.

There are four basis reasons of farmland becoming degraded in the world today. Globally, 65% of degradation is caused by too much animal grazing and tree clearance, constituting 35% and 30% respectively. A further 28% of worldwide degradation is due to over-cultivation of crops. Other causes were responsible for only 7% collectively.

Three causes shown on the table affected three regions differently in the 1990s. Europe, with the highest percentage of total land degraded (23%), was also ahead in terms of deforestation (9.8%) and over-cultivation (7.7%). However, being first about over-grazing in Oceania was the only expectation, compared to Europe’s 5.5% and North America’s 1.5% correspondingly. Besides that, North America had the lowest proportion of degraded land at only 5%, and the major reason of this was over-cultivation (3.3%).

Thank you so much!
