There are many methods to evaluate the achievements of students such as examinations, teamwork ability, research skills or group projects. Although formal tests are the most common way for all schools in the world, I do not totally agree that it is the best measure of monitoring educational results. In this essay, I will attempt to outline some key reasons for this.

On the one hand, paper tests are used to verify that the learner is ready to move on the next stage. It has been used for almost all schools for a long time since this approach saves money and time. The teachers can evaluate hundreds of pupils in a paper examination and mark the scores by machine. This way not only monitors them but also reviews their knowledge that the teacher is confident that they could complete the assigned tasks and get the best results. There are clearly certain advantages to exams since they help to ensure fairness by imposing the same conditions for everyone.

On the other hand, exams also have clear drawbacks. Test wise candidates can often perform well on tests without having good underlying knowledge or skills. Some test-takers perform poorly in exams simply because of anxiety. A number of measures should be taken to address these concerns like practical skill. Besides teamwork is also important to assess achievement of students as it requires experiences and good idea to deal with problems, especially making the best plan though it takes a lot of time and money to train pupils.

In conclusion, although formal examinations are essential and useful, there have been other ways to evaluate the competence of students without paper or pen.
