There are many methods to evaluate the competence of students. Although formal tests are the most common for all school in the world, I don’t totally agree that it is the best measure of monitoring educational results. In this essay, I will attempt to answer argument for all my views.
On the one hand, paper tests are the most popular method so as to choose the best students in courses. It has applied for all schools for a long time because of saving money, time and convenience. A good example is teachers can evaluate hundreds of pupils in a paper examination, after that they can mark the scores by machine. Not only monitoring them but also reviewing the knowledge, time managed skills to complete the assigned tasks excellently. In many universities, multiple choice tests are a good way which is difficult than other methods after courses, so most of the students always worry about ones when the tests coming.
On the other hand, practical skills are also important to assess student achievement. Though it takes many time and money to train and study pupil, skills are necessary experiences for work in the future. So developed countries such as Canada, they often teach their students by academic knowledge lessons and enhance practical lessons so that students could use and work immediately. Therefore, Canadian has not concentrate to book or paper which is most countries used, they spend the time to gain experiences and their University always rank the top in the world about education.
In conclusion, although formal examinations are essential and useful, there have been other ways to evaluate the competence of students without paper or pen.
