Topic: Tell us about an "Eureka" moment in your life.

For extended periods, the traditional quote “Goodness is better than beauty” had left my beliefs. My thick lips were the central attention of everyone; therefore, they always wonder why I have this feature and how ugly lips I have. My mother listened carefully my stories at school with a affectionate eyes.

“ My darling! Your lips are unattractive. Your friends are true totally. This is your lesson: respecting the truth !”

In a charity journey, my class purpose is to give food presents and school supplies to orphans. In the orphan’s group which I guided them on how to dance and sing, I couldn't take my eyes off a girl with cleft palates. She attracts me with her shining smile. All defects of her lips were overshadowed by her smile. Looking at her, a vivid image of me as a kid reappeared. I realized that the more I grow up, the more I change but my smile is still intact. The first impression of everyone I met about me is and only one: smile. “You not only smile but also know how to make others smile following”. All memories called my deep thinking about myself. From my unexpectedly mother’s words, I comprehended that the starting point of loving myself is accepting myself with overall strengths and weaknesses. Respecting the truth to possess the objective view and learn how to make my strong point more outstanding. Smiling makes me releasing pressure and being more confident. From people I know, I recognize the value of my smile: spreading my positive energies.

In the years that followed, the more I researched about beauty definition, the more I realized how broad and flexible it is. Each phase, each culture, each nation has a different and unique beauty definition. At that time, I realized that everyone should cherish this beauty. I supposed that everyone has unique beauty on their body until I surprisingly witnessed a woman's face that stops a clock, Thi No. This character appears in daily stories that she is ugly woman symbol but until I learned this work “Chi Pheo” (Nam Cao) seriously and methodically, I was both astonished how hideous she is, nothing feature in her face is temporarily considered and comprehended why the author portrayed this female character like that. There is something invaluable in that worthless person: love. Her humanity resuscitated Chi Pheo’s honesty. Thanks to this work, I grasped the philosophy of “ Put yourself in other’s shoes”, turning out that actual beauty exists inside. True pearls are never easy to find.

One day, I will grow old and my smile wrinkled. This cycle of life makes me longingly remember “smiling me” but I understand I need to build a sustainable value system to cope with future challenges. Like a banyan tree with large stumps that are not easily knocked down by storms, humans like trees. Surficial beauty will fade but core values never. Therefore, instead of dreaming to become a cosmetic doctor, I have a desire to actualize my educationalist. I hope that one day children can appreciate their value and form a good personality. They don’t have to force themselves to other standards like I used to. Finding yourself and constructing sustainable values journey definitely requires wisdom to recognize your right direction change. I realize every change starts from myself, at this moment, from education.”

- “This is my story and the origin of my philosophy through 50 years, my baby granddaughter. Time flies so fast”

- “ But you still have a charming smile”

- “And you too. Now it’s time for sleeping”

- “Good night, grandma”
