Please help me understand this sentence

No doubt all played a part and were materially assisted by the existence of the Papacy in Rome whose claims to political and territorial authority clashed with those of the German emperor and weakened imperial attempts to impose a rigid feudal hierarchy over Italian space.

I couldn't understand the later part of the sentence. Does it mean that "weakened imperial attempts to impose a rigid feudal hierarchy over Italian space" also one material assistant? Or does it mean that "the existence of the Papacy in Rome" weakened imperial attempts to impose a rigid feudal hierarchy over Italian space.

Thank you very much!

Hi CJ,

Thank you for answering my question. The meaning you pointed out, I guessed it from the context. Does it a common usage for native people? Because I feel the one which you didn't select is more grammatically correct (although not smooth in the meaning).

Thank you!

Hi CJ

Thank you for answering my question and correcting my grammar.
It's a sentence that is grammatically correct or not. It is not an interpretation that is grammatically correct. Maybe you're saying that you think your first interpretation is what the writer really meant, but as I have said, it is not. The second interpretation says what the writer meant.
