Please help me understand this sentence.

But Constable's detailed inventories of cloud formations and weather conditions, the highly sophisticated classifications of geological types, vegetation and building forms supplied to nineteenth landscape painters by John Ruskin, or the close analysis of topographic maps by contempory 'land artists', would hardly suggest that if they were 'armed' with the same techniques Mikesell claims for the geographical arsenal, landscape artists would despise them.

I couldn't understand what the landscape artists would despise, and how this part connects with the former part. It seems very sudden and weird to me.

I am sorry I have to add some new ideas. would hardly suggest that (if they were 'armed' with the same techniques Mikesell claims for the geographical arsenal, landscape artists would despise them)". The whole sentence in the parenthesis is what they hardly suggest?

The whole sentence in the parenthesis is what they hardly suggest? Then there is another question. "if the were armed...", what are they refer to? the artists?
