Please help me understand a text

Would you please help me understand this bold text? I read it a million times and still can't understand.

At the heart of Asian American impersonation, I posit, is the deliberate confounding of both visible difference and visible sameness. Such a paradox grants Asian American acts of impersonation a double foundation and makes such acts particularly effective in both critiquing the impositions placed upon Asian American subjects via the roles in the U.S. imaginery that they have been historically asked to perform and foregrounding the ways in which these very roles might be utilized to disrupt the codes of conduct they ostensibly uphold or to suduce the performer into playing a socially sanctioned part.

You copied it wrong. She wrote "the U.S. imaginary", not "imaginery", not that it makes any diference. "Imaginary" cannot be that noun. She also writes of a deliberate confounding of two things, but she writes "both", which is excrescent. I have so little confidence in her English skills that I can't be bothered to try decipher her.
