Topic: The tradition that the family gets together to eat meals is disappearing. What are the reasons? What are the impacts?

In recent years, there is a considerable rise in the disappearance of family reunions. This essay shall discuss some of the main reasons why this practice is happening and offer a few influences of this phenomenon.

There are some explanations for the phenomenon that sharing meals together is disappearing. The primary reason is that in the fast paced life, parents may spend most of their time to work and earning money or to build social relationships. Hence, the amount of time which is spent for their children and family may be fewer. Gradually there is no time for having meals together. Another reason is that when children enter the adulthood, they tend to study, work and live far from their home and their family in order to accumulate knowledge and enhance employment opportunity. So they only come back home in the weekends or on the holiday or special vacations. As the result, eating meals together may not regularly happen.

The disappearance of family reunions can lead to some effects on every family member. Firstly, family meals could foster warmth, love, security and the sense of belonging and identity, if it loses, there would be lack of connections and interactions between family members. This can lead to increase in conflicts between family members. Secondly, children may have inappropriate behaviors and thoughts when they eat less meal with their parents. A recent research paper showed that the lower frequent family meals are associated with higher rates of drinking, smoking and illegal drugs use in pre-teens and teenagers when compared to family that eat together regularly.

To put it in nutshell, sharing meals together is not frequently activity in today’s family due to some main reasons and this can lead to some serious impacts on family members.
