Please, help me to explain

I found a grammar exersise with a sentence "Edison accepted the offer and soon he had/was having regular lessons." I feel that the right option is was having, but i don't know how to explain it to my students. It doesn't fit ti any of the past continuous rules that i'm aware of. Thanks in advance!

If you want to emphasize the duration of the Edison's learning process, then use "was having"; if you want to draw attention to the fact of taking regular lessons, use"had".
