Topic 1 : Some people think that the government should decide the subject for students to study in university. Others believe that student should be allowed to apply for the subject they prefer. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It is true that tertiary education is the preparing step for students to participate in the future workforce so what they have been taught in universities is obviously important. However, whether the authority should take measure in deciding the subjects for student causes a heated debate. My view is that the government should only be responsible for regulating some basic compulsory subjects and let the student choose the others.
First, there is no doubt that the authorities have broad views of potential branches of knowledge that are essential for the labor market. Therefore, they can create the mandatory curriculum which offers job-related knowledge for the learners who will enter the workplace after graduated. As a consequence, graduated students can have competitive advantages for seeking jobs in such a competitive market while the societies get the benefits from having a high qualified workforce. So it is important for the government to touch their hand in design some certain university’s disciplines.
That is not to say that students have no right to decide what they would learn. Beside the mandatory subjects assigned by authorities, students should be free to choose their passion in other areas which can encourage them to involve themselves in the learning process. University should not only provide academic knowledge but should also the place where learners can find their own interests.
In conclusion, I'm of the opinion that both government and students should take their hands into deciding university's subject. The government should be responsible for ensuring students must have a solid foundation and let them be free in development. (265)
