My name is Le Thanh Tan. I was a master student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. I graduated in April 2018 with GPA: 7.84/10 and had a publication. I thirst for expansion of my knowledge, especially knowledge in construction management, and continue to study in order to become a better lecturer in the future.
Vietnamese construction industry is one of the most important sectors of the economy, which plays an important role in the country's economic growth. It faced many difficulties due to the impacts of the economic crisis. In recent years, however, the construction industry in Vietnam has shown signs of recovery. In addition, Vietnam has integrated into the international market. Therefore, these not only brought many opportunities but also created significant challenges for Vietnamese businesses when they have to compete in today’s fiercely competitive environment. Therefore, the construction firms in Vietnam have to compete with not only domestic companies but also foreign corporations. In general, the labour productivity of Vietnam is still lower than that of other countries in the area.
In Vietnam, according to statistics of the Ministry of Labour, War invalids and Social Affairs in 2019, there are 8.150 labour accidents causing 8.327 victims. In the field of the construction industry, the main concern is that not only do employers not focus on the safety of workers, but also that workers themselves are less aware of the importance of OSH instruments against hazards on construction sites.
Many studies have shown that workers' mistakes are a major cause of accidents at work, and this can be mitigated by occupational safety training programs. Moreover, in Vietnam, labour safety training programs is theoretical, less practiced, so that trained people will have difficulty recognizing the potential risks on site.
As a citizen of Vietnam, I would like to expand my knowledge in this area and hope that my research can help my country to solve the problem of labour safety training. Therefore, I choose the application of Virtual Reality in training, expericing, immersing in the processes of building construction as the main field of my topic research. The objective is to help construction workers improve, raise the awareness of prevention, vigilance and overcome unsafe conditions when working in the construction site. Actually, the product of my master thesis just used an HTC Vive virtual reality device to observe in a virtual environment and did not have many intergrative actions. However, at recent, with the popularity of VR/AR, I think I can use the support of motion devices in VR like KAT Walk Premium or Cyberith Virtualizer ELITE 2 to immerse yourself more in virtual construction site. I am confident that with my skills, research experience, together with the supervision of the Assistant Professors of Thamasat University, I will successfully conduct this research and complete my Ph.D. Program. In the future, I hope I can become a good lecturer and contribute my part to the development of developing countries in general, and the development of Vietnam in particular.
