There are many security measures in big cities today to reduce the crime rate. To what extent do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Public security measures have experienced revolution with the advent of digital cameras and other information technologies. However, there is no consensus on whether these high-tech methods have bought more benefits or harms to the residents.

It is obvious that the implementation of more surveillance measures facilitates the development of a safe community. This is mainly due to the fact that knowing there are a vast number of surveillance cameras, those with criminal intention might be reluctant to proceed further. For example, petty criminals like shoplifters and pickpockets are less likely to operate in parts of cities where they know that they are being watched. Apart from that, victims are more likely to be saved with more security guides. Clearly, with interference with private guide or police, the victims are less likely to suffer heinous offenses.

However, complains about implementing more security measures should also be taken into considerations. The biggest concern is the high expenditure in implementing and maintaining those security measures. Many citizens argued that the government should allocate the available monetary resources to prevention of the occurrence of crime in the first place. Plenty of evidence has reflected that poverty is the root cause for offense, therefore by dedicating tax revenue to alleviate poverty might serve as a much preferable and effective mean to stop crime. Better education on legislation and moral lessons teaching might be another effective ways to combat the accelerating crime rate. Research has indicated that most law-abiding citizens are not self-made, they are the results of appropriate education. In order words, it is more economic and effective if the local council could spend more budgets on education than installing and maintaining those expensive and costly security means.

As a result of high incidence of crime, a large number of security measures are employed to combat this issue. Although this approach has considerable merits, but the government should also pay attention to the root causes of this phenomenon and tackle it from multiple aspects.
