Question: Explain your own leadership and influencing skills to be future leaders or influencers?
Answer:
In my schooling, I did not notice much about leadership; however, being one of the best students of the province, I did aware of my influence on my peers’ opinion and behavior due to the fact that smart and academic excellence is the best transformation of leadership in most views of children. In my university, I always initiated to do different things owing to intellectual confidence. For example, when enrolling in E-commerce course, while other people chose the final examination to be a comprehensive assignment, I have called for a group of classmates to experiment a digital marketing strategy in order to get the real experience. We have got the 10/10 mark for the practical project.
I started to realize how leadership and influencing skills can bring me and my team the best results when I worked in Human resources (HR) team, in a construction project of Formosa Group. It was a time our project organized a football tournament between six teams, among which my team is the Associate team of HR, planning, and logistic. At the very first moment, every staff has had the same opinion that my team be the worst and would be the loser anyway owing to two reasons: firstly, our men tend to be “in office”, not as strong as civil team; secondly, our team was “associate”, did not have the team-work experience as others. Nevertheless, as an HR leader, I have inspired a different spirit into my team that we have a chance to win because of either that our nice cheerleading squad is powerful or that confidence makes “nothing impossible”. I have gathered as many cheerleaders as possible, encouraged and persuaded them to join every match and cheerleading spontaneously. Our beautiful girls have affected the other boys’ feeling, motivated their jealous and therefore reduce other teams’ focusing on the match. Finally, we have got the first prize in front of all staff's surprise. In addition, be confident of my leading skills, I did lead the Vietnamese HR team working effectively and was the only girl at site getting the Employee of the Month Award and nominated to be the key personnel of the company (different with the project site).
Besides the academic excellence and leading skills, practical vision and critical reasoning skills are critical for a successful future leader. Even I have just worked at Most for one year, I have soon gained the belief of senior managers and been nominated to take charge of making the Decree regulating S&T Enterprise Policy. This project challenged me the most because I have to deal with very macro issues, with both private companies and government bodies. For example, enterprises want to reduce tax as much as possible, but the tax agency has to keep government income stable. In looking for solutions, I have engrossed in a lot of legal documents and theories, as well as studied practical cases of S&T enterprises. Then I have found out that at the first glance, reducing tax can lead to a drop in government income, but in the end, the policy could help to not only create many jobs but also increase GDP of Vietnam. By showing some typical S&T enterprise case studies, breaking down their contribution to the employment and income of Vietnam, I have persuaded successfully the Tax agency in clearing out the hard conditions to reduce tax for S&T enterprise. This is the very first step but a really important step to later persuade the prime minister and his officials to pass on that decree.
Becoming a future leader requires such many qualities as intellectual confidence, initiative, critical reasoning and leading skills that I have prepared myself step by step and it has been strengthened as the time flies. I believe that my awareness and careful preparation is the firm background to make the most impressive influence in near future.
