Please help me!! Task 2 IELTS. 62

Some people think it is more important to spend public money on promoting a healthy
lifestyle in order to prevent illness than to spend it on the treatment for people who are
already ill. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, the reallocation of national budget to preventive medicine rather than curative
one has been receiving a great deal of public attention. Compared to treatment for those who are
already ill, promoting a healthy lifestyle is far more important.
It is definitely more cost effective to place the premium on the prevention of illness. First, from
an individual perspective, since it is more straightforward and economical for people to pursue a
healthy lifestyle than to seek treatment for diseases, they will save a lot of money down the road.
In fact, exercising on a daily basis is key to forestall an array of conditions such as obesity of
diabetes mellitus, which in turn dismisses the need of paying exorbitant amount for treatment.
Second, by practicing preventive care, like alcohol abstinence and healthy diet, citizens will help
build a healthier society. This means that people will more productive, which facilitates the
economic growth of the country.
Beside the apparent monetary values, illness prevention is also supported by a variety of medical
facts. First, since most diseases caused by a sedentary lifestyle are chronic conditions, the only
viable way to be free from such diseases is preventing them in the first place. For example,
hypertension and Type 2 diabetes are the two of the most common chronic diseases, affecting
billions of people, but both can be easily prevented by a balance diet. Second, by promoting a
healthier lifestyle as well as providing regular medical check-up, a number of diseases like
cancer can be prevented before their terminal stages, which results in saving people’s lives.
In conclusion, public money should be used on the consolidation of public health through
encouraging a healthy lifestyle, rather than on the treatment for the ill. The government should
invest in the prevention of diseases, not in the cure.
