Please help me review this IELTS task 2 essay

A few languages are increasing spoken in different countries, while the use of others is rapidly declining. Is it a positive or negative development?

Nowadays, while there is a ubiquitous spread of some languages, many others are being less spoken. In my opinion, although this phenomenal brings undeniable benefits, it is not without flaws.

To begin with, there are substantial benefits to society when many countries use the same languages. First, in the age of integration and globalization, it is important to break the language barrier that hampers the exchange and collaborations between nations. Using the same languages will lead to the boost in multilateral trade and cultural exchange. Therefore, the developing countries can acquire others’ culmination and achievement to accelerate the process of developing. In a smaller scale, such as individual lives, the widespread of a few languages will facilitate their daily conservation and exposure to a variety of information sources.

However, the negatives of this development should also be taken into consideration. The decline in the use of many languages will have an adverse effect on cultural diversity in the world. Each different language has its own unique characteristics that are hard to be conveyed in other languages. For example, to describe a heavy rain in English, people use the idiom “rain cats and dogs”, which will be meaningless if it is directly translated into other languages. As a result, many folk songs, myths and literature can be misrepresented and lose their essence when the original language is replaced by new one. This is the reason why many Asian people complain about their culture is distorted and misunderstood in Western countries.

In conclusion, the recent development of some languages being more popular has certainly benefited the society as it breaks the barrier between countries. However, I believe the negatives that accompany this growth should also be controlled.
