Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like. Others believe that they should only be allowed to study subjects that will be useful in the future, such as those related to science and technology.

Certain people suggest that only subjects that are useful for students' future must be allowed to learn instead of letting them study anything they like. I certainly agree that there are some subjects which are more important than others, but I do believe that students need to study their favourite courses.
First of all, it is evident that a university student has to focus on their core curriculum which includes the most indispensable courses to acquire necessary knowledge for their future jobs. For instance, a student in Electronics has to learn mathematics, physics, computing science; or learning literature, history, teaching method is compulsory for students in the department of pedagogy. Those subjects supply the basic knowledge and the main skills for a specific occupation that every employee cannot lack of.
However, students on tertiary education should also be allow to pursue their interested subjects whose contents might fit students' character or talent. A young badminton champion ought to practice this kind of sport or an amateur reporter at high school should be encouraged to learn some credits in journalism at his/her university. Owing to the continuation of their favourite subjects, their talents can flourish and all achievements received will be the strong points in their CV when seeking for a job. Free-choice subjects also provide students with other soft skills which might be useful for their work afterwards.
To sum up, I totally concur with mandatory subjects which directly related to students' future careers but selective courseworks depending on students' fondness also possess their own values.
