Topic: Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What other measures do you think might be effective?

Some people think that increasing the fuel price can help reduce the traffic growth as well as curb pollution issue. In my opinion, that is not a wise suggestion and I totally disagree with this idea.
In both economic and social sides, a huge traffic volume, especially in megacities, is not related to petrol price and so as to air pollution. A rising demand of individual cars and the lack of convenient public transports seem to be the main reasons. Meanwhile, high fuel price engenders many negative effects on the economy. Gasoline and diesel are crucial fuels for many fields from industry, agriculture to service sectors. If the oil price is increased by producers or taxes, it might result in a significant elevation of price of many essential goods. Thus, exportation will be less competitive while each family must pay more for their daily basis.
On the other hand, traffic growth and pollution can not be restricted only by high petrol price but vehicle price and public transport. Instead of increasing gasoline price, the government should implement a dual policy: limiting the number of individual cars by high tax whereas encouraging the use of public transport. Traffic volume will drop if car registration fee or circulation toll are considerably high. Besides, mass rapid transportation projects should be prioritised in the yearly infrastruture development programmes of the goverment. Moreover, it is necessary to have incentives to manufacture more non-fossil-fuel vehicles such as electric car or bicycles.
In conclusion, I believe that the petrol price does not affect growing traffic and pollution. Public transport and eco-friendly mean of transport are truly the way to solve these problems.
