---------------------------------------------------

This diagram illustrates a cycle of life of salmon, which is a type of large fresh-water born fishes used in many favourite dishes nowadays. The cycle includes four steps of development .

In this figure, salmons have to go through four periods of life in which they transform from an egg to be a true salmon. Each period is attached with a separate habitat: upper river, lower river and open sea.

Salmon eggs are laid within an upstream area of the river covered by reeds and small stones. These eggs are kept for growth in a stable milieu owing to the slow moving of river flow until becoming 3-8-cm newborn fishes called the "fry". The fries then go downstream by the fast flowing of the river in approximately four years. During this course, they grow to be "adolescent" smolts whose length is about 12-15 cm. At this stage, the young salmons are ready to migrate to their ancestor's familiar habitat, the ocean, where they fully developped to an adult salmon. The salmons continue to stay in the ocean around five years before return to the original river to lay egg.

Then, the offspring will be born and a new life cycle restarts.
