Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Other say that there are more important environment problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Of all truisms about environmental issues, perhaps one of the truest is that many species are dying out. Although some people are desperately worrying about the extinction of these plants and animals, others’ stance is that other problems deserve to receive more attention. This essay will discuss both viewpoints and present my own opinion.

Granted, people are concerned that species extinction is the most serious issue nowadays for the following reasons. First, plants and animals play the role as the foundation of healthy ecosystems, which help maintain humans’ living environment. Without species, ecosystems may be destroyed. As a result, people are not likely to have enough clean water, land, or air. Second, the fact that natural creatures are on the brink of extinction may lead to the lack of medical ingredients. Since the ancient time, people have learned to used extracts of plants’ or animals’ body parts to produce medicines, if this kind of issue is not tackled soon, alternative ingredients will have to be studied, which may take up such a long time.

However, I agree that it is global warming and overpopulation that are more urgent problems. Regarding global warming, it may be one of the central factor causing the loss of living creatures. In other words, if global warming can be alleviated, natural species can be preserved. Besides, compared to the loss of specific species of plant and animal, overpopulation is more disadvantageous for humans. A great number of social consequences result from this issue such as poverty and unemployment. In addition, while scientists may find other alternatives to replace extinct species, hardly can any attempts be made to supersede humans.

In conclusion, while it may be reasonable to consider species extinction as one alarming environmental problem, others issues, which are global warming and overpopulation, should be more vital.
