In the future, nobody will buy printed newspapers of books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
With the constant development of modern technology, a lot of advancements have been invented and people have a need to use them due to their ultimate usefulness. They, in turn, create new cultures for human beings. One of the new cultures that advents have brought to us is cost-free online reading. Some people believe that this new type of reading would gradually replace physical books and magazines thoroughly. However, in my view, no replacement will take place in the future but a diversity of reading cultures will be available for individuals to choose from.
It cannot be denied that reading is getting more and more time-efficient and economical. Many people do not have to travel miles to search for newspaper stands or bookstores to buy reading materials. With the help of the Internet, when it connects with devices like computers, laptops, smartphones or e-book readers, countless reading sources will immediately appear on the screens of those devices in just the blink of an eye at no cost. Moreover, it makes reading more convenient as all reading materials are ready stored in just a palm-sized smartphone. Thus, reading can be taken place at almost any time and in everywhere. As a result, bulky and heavy weight of hard copied materials will become less preferable.
However, reading some tangible materials still suits some individuals’ needs because of these following reasons. Firstly, to those who are nostalgic, they may sustain reading them, as the touch and smell of paper remind them of idyllic feelings. Secondly, reading materials like this does no harm on human’ s health, whereas the blue light emitting from the screens of online reading devices causes eye damage and sleeping disorder if they read at night before bedtime. Thirdly, sources of print media are considered more reliable than they are on the internet. Before any press reaches readers, they are meticulously censored by editors, publishers or government officials. Meanwhile, the authenticity and validation of most pervasive reading sources popping up in just a click are not justified scrupulously or even justification by no means takes place. Last but not least, reading touchable materials are more intensive than doing it on machinery. It is easier for an avid reader to memorise information if he can use his own techniques to highlight important details for himself. For example, he can use pens or pencils to underline key words, write some notes, or draw images, diagrams or flowcharts of reading texts. Nonetheless, he cannot do that as he utilises technology in reading.
In conclusion, each way of reading has its own merits and demerits. Technology introduces to people a new mode of reading and diversify reading cultures. Each individual will take their preference into consideration when they come to choose which means of reading suits them best.
