00I have to write a review on 'Oranges are not the olny fruit'. I have a lot of problems with putting things into words. I don't really understand the end of the book, that's why the summary part isn't very good, in my opinion. Also, I think that the summary is too long. I don't know, but maybe the end of my review is a bit too confusing. Could you help me, please? It's an assignment I have to do, it's part of continuous assessment, and this assignment will be very important for the marks I get at the end of the year.02p

From this moment on, we are able to discover, step by step, the meaning of the title, which makes the story much the better, as you have to work on it. When Jeanette is in the hospital, her mother always brings her oranges. ‘Oranges are the only fruit,’01a01span00[2]02span02a00 she explains to Jeanette. In her opinion, Christianity is the only true religion, homosexuality is a sin and black people are bad.00Then it turns out that Jeanette is lesbian: one day, she meets a girl called Melanie with whom she falls in love.00 00She manages to convict Melanie to Protestantism, but when she confesses her mother about her affection for a girl, the latter becomes furious, and tells the Church about the relationship. A crucial moment is, when during the mass on Sunday, the pastor says: 00 00‘These children of God have fallen under Satan’s spell. Peace seems to return, but then Jeanette falls in love with Katy. Although their relationship is kept secret, the Church discovers it again. She decides to leave the Church and her parents, to go to live with Katy. In fact, little by little, she discovered that ‘Oranges are not the only fruit.’ A writer who is able to deliver this message with such a powerful imagery must belong 00 00to the real masters.00While reading I wondered whether it was an autobiography or not 00 00– Jeanette Winterson herself was also an adopted child, her mother raised her to be a missionary and she left home because of the facts she was lesbian was opposed by her parents. Nevertheless, the author claims it is not true. “I wouldn’t believe that “Oranges is my life if I were you. I think that would be a great mistake. I wanted to invent myself as a fictional character. And I did.”01a01span00[4]02span02a00 00Winterson keeps switching between her story and legends and fairy tales, what makes the narrative rather complex. Sometimes I could see the link with the proper story, but it is often a mystery what the relevance of those passages is.00At parts, ‘Oranges are not the only fruit’ is rather tedious. By moments I had to chew on the orange that the book is. But I enjoyed doing it, and I would recommend everyone to do it too: the structure, the language and the style, everything is wonderful elaborated. 00Of course I do recognize that ‘Oranges are not the only fruit’. ‘Oranges’ is not the only book written by Jeanette Winterson, and that is why I want to discover ‘the other children’ she has created. ‘Arts and Lies’ and ‘The World’ are already at the top of the list of books to read.02p
