My essay:

Businesses play a crucial role in the economic development of any country. Some people say that besides making profits, enterprises should pay attention to their social duties such as environmental protection or engaging philanthropic activities. In my opinion, although maximizing shareholder value is important, businesses should not overlook their responsibility to the community.

On the one hand, all businesses should be encouraged to make money. The main reason is that the more profits companies earn, the more taxes they can pay for their governments. As a result, governments can use those taxes to spend on important fields such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security. In addition, a successful business could bring a large number of jobs for many people. In my country, the Vingroup Corporation has recently emerged as a giant in numerous areas including real-estate and tourism. Within several years, this company has provided thousands of jobs for local people.

On the other hand, enterprises also need to show their accountabilities for their society. First, all business operations must do not harm the environment. Companies must comply with environmental regulations of the governments such as reducing factory emissions and responsible disposal of waste. It is very hard to accept that the revenues of companies are achieved at the expense of environmental pollution. Second, it would be great if successful businesses could payback for the community. They can act to benefit society in many ways such as engaging charitable giving and financing scholarships. Annually, the Vinamilk Corporation organizes quite a few volunteer programs to help poor children in remote areas in Vietnam, providing food and clothes as well as building schools for them. They received high praise from the public and the government.

In conclusion, I do believe that in addition to promoting profitability, each business also needs to contribute to the welfare of society.
