Some people think that strict punishments for driving offenses are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of road accidents daily. A segment of society has a firm belief that stringent punishments enable citizens to reduce this problem. Nevertheless, opponents support other possible solutions to make the road safer. In my opinion, I am strongly in favor of both measures to tackle this issue.

Firstly, strict punishments promote better driving habits as these rules and regulations help commuters to realize the importance of driving carefully and safely, otherwise, they have to deal with car crashes, dangerous accidents. In addition, penalties for driving offenders are also considered as an act as a deterrent. Depending on the level of a traffic violation, for example, when travelers commit petty crimes, such as blowing the red light, their license has been suspended for two weeks. However, the bigger collision is on the roads, the more serious situation is, the careless drivers have to bear the consequence, especially leading to prison sentences. As a result, with the strict punishment, citizens become more and more alert, which encourages them to avoid doing the wrong ways, thereby diminishing the high volume of traffic violations.

On the other hand, there are a plethora of potential measures to improve the safety of the roads. Authorities can bring in speed bumps during the day. A prime example is in Ho Chi Minh city, in the hour frame from 10 pm until 5 am tomorrow, commuters have to drive below 50 km per hour. Moreover, signs of road bends built along the street are an extremely helpful method to notify people of the dangerous bends in advance, which calms the drivers’ fast speed. Additionally, it is vitally important to raise people’s awareness and consciousness before in traffic. For instance, teachers ought to guide students about traffic laws during the lessons.

In conclusion, both strict punishment and other effective methods would be a great benefit to reduce the high number of accidents. Government and inhabitants should take into consideration when applying any measures to resolve traffic problems.
