Research suggests that most of the criminals who are sent to prisons commit crimes when set free. What are the reasons? What can be done to solve the problem?
It is evident that the majority of the offenders who are incarcerated, commit further crimes after being released from prisons. From my perspective, I think the lack of employability and the misperception of criminals about life are an explanation for this, and the problem can be solved by providing these people with educational programs and psychotherapy.
To begin with, due to the lack of employability, the wrongdoers who are released from prisons usually meet unemployment, and if this prolongs, they would possibly continue their misdeeds. Seemingly, since most of these people do not have any credentials or skills to find work, they subject to financial hardship. Therefore, to keep them survive, they have to re-offend. Additionally, criminals are susceptible to illegal activities as their opinion about life are somehow misguided. Criminals tend to have negative thoughts about life and anti-social behaviors, which might coerce them into engaging in criminal acts.
Fortunately, however, there are two promising solutions to this problem. First of all, prisoners should be given vocational training programs while serving their sentences. This can equip them with essential skills and knowledge, helping them to find jobs more easily when they are released. For example, in some countries such as Japan, prisoners are taught about needlework, so perhaps in the future when they are set free, they can work in the textile industry. Dealing with this problem also involves giving some hardened criminals psychotherapy. With the guidance of psychotherapists, these people can erase their gloom thoughts and form positive behaviors. By implementing these initiatives, the recidivism rate can be curbed.
In conclusion, the rising recidivism rate is a serious problem that might be ascribed to the lack of employability, along with negative thoughts about the life of criminals. I recommend that this problem can be addressed by giving prisoners vocational training programs and psychotherapy.
