Some people believe that the only purpose of films is to entertain. Others say films should have educational values. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people assert that the only function of movies is for recreation, whilst others believe educational values should be included in movies. From my perspective, I agree that the purpose of movies is not restricted to leisure, it should also have educational benefits.

There is a justification for why some believe entertaining is the sole purpose of movies. First of all, modern people are under considerable pressure from working and studying. Therefore, after a hectic day, they would preferentially watch movies for pleasure rather than edification. In other words, a movie that contains educational messages would turn out to be a lesson, which probably is mind-numbing for many people. Therefore, in some people’s point of view, adding educational values into movies is unnecessary.

Conversely, those who believe that educational values should be added into movies might think that movies can be used as a useful tool to impart knowledge. It is scientifically proven that people can easily understand and remember better the concepts when watching movies than just merely reading about it. For example, according to a recent study, when taking a historical comprehensive test, students watching history movies perform better than those who read it. Furthermore, movies also exert profound impacts on people’s behaviours especially children. Hence, if movies can transmit educational values, children can possibly establish positive behaviours.

In conclusion, I believe both sides of the argument have their merits. On balance, however, it seems that in addition to satisfying recreational demands, movies should also contain educational values. This is because movies are presumably an effective tool to share knowledge. As well as this, they also have significant effects on people, particularly children.
