The diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity through the use of hydroelectricity in a particular dam.

In general, there are five main stages in the production, commencing in holding water in a reservoir and ending with the transmission of power via long-distance lines.

In the first step, there is a reservoir holding amount of water. When power generation begins, water collected in a huge reservoir passes through intake at the bottom of the reservoir. Otherwise, there is a rectangular-shaped gate preventing the water from flowing out. After that, water flows down a long tunnel called a penstock and then creates pressure which is used to spin the tubine connecting the generator in the powerhouse. At the same time, the remaining water flows out into the river below the dam. The final stage is that the resulting pressure from the water is transformed into electricity, which is transport to long-distance power lines.
