Essay & Composition Writing

Please help me review IELTS writing task 2

With the pressures on today’s young people to succeed academically, some people believe that non-academic subjects at school (eg: physical education and cookery) should be removed from the syllabus so that children can concentrate wholly on academic subjects.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, obtaining academic diplomas and degrees is becoming increasingly important. Many parents put a lot of pressure on their children to get excellent academic results and believe that it is unnecessary to waste time on non-academic subjects such as physical education and cooking. I completely disagree with this opinion. Below I will explain my points of view.

Non-academic subjects such as physical education do not affect students' results, but on the contrary, they support students to strengthen their health so they can study better. Everybody knows how important exercising and doing sports are. For a person to be successful, their body must be healthy first. Physical education does not only improve physical health but also mental health. It helps them relax, refresh and overcome stresses from academic subjects.

Furthermore, non-academic subjects have many benefits such as developing social skills and soft skills that students need in their everyday lives. Through non-academic activities, students have the opportunity to meet more people, make more friends, and gain more life experience. Moreover, classes such as singing and painting may help some students realize their true talents. Students who usually participate in non-academic subjects are more confident and optimistic about going through difficulties that they might encounter in their academic subjects and in their lives.

Unacademic classes should be encouraged, instead of taking them away and forcing students to focus only on math, physics, and chemistry since these classes have more benefits than drawbacks. The most important thing students should study is how to balance their time between academic and non-academic subjects.
