Please help me picture it.

Hi,

The writing below is from a book by David Sedaris. And I have two questions in the underlined part because I can't picture it well

(1) What is it that is enclosing a private garden? Buildings (townhouses) along with tree-lined block? (2) If so who could be the owner of the private garden?

I was nearing the end of a brief seasonal job when I noticed that my favorite town house had been put up for sale. "A Federal Gem," the papers would have called it. Four stories tall, the building stood on a quiet, tree-lined block enclosing a private garden.

Thank you,

M

The town house. His favorite town house. I think the word enclosing may be being used loosely. Somewhere behind the town house was a plot of land that was hidden from the street. The owner of the town house is the owner of this garden.

Sounds good. I have seen that type of townhouse. I've never seen a private garden shared by some townhouses in NY so I asked.

Thank you, it made perfect sense.

There may still be some misunderstanding. The author is only talking about one town house. All four floors would be owned by the same person and be considered one town house for one family to live in. The private garden is not shared with any other owners.

I've lived there (NY, not a fancy townhouse) so I now have very clear picture. Emotion: smile
