The pie chart compares the alternation in factors affecting the studying decision of students at a university in UK between 1987 and 2017.
Overall, there are more people deciding to study at a university, which is closer to their home. While other factors such as quality of teaching, quality of resources or sports were not as important as before, they still chose suitable degree courses as the most important reason.
Social activities and sports was a noticeable factor in 1987 with 19% of students, but it fell dramatically at only 6% in 2007, while a significant decrease was also seen in quality of teaching with nearly 7% in 20 years later. In contrast, the distance between university and their parental home was considered as a significant reason with a remarkable change during the period. It had a twofold increase after 20 years ( from 10% to 22%).
Turning to other factors, a suitable degree course still accounted for the major factor when it slightly rose from 35% in 1987 to 37% in 2007. Furthermore, there is less than 4% compared to the figure in 1987 about the percentage of students who chose the quality of resources as their reason for studying at a university.
