Please, help me explain this task.

The information given in the text: "Shirase and his team sailed into Antartica's Bay of Whales in the smallest ship ever to try its luck in these dangerous waters."

Depend on the information given in the text, let's identify whether the statement below is true, false or not given

The statement: "Since Shirase arrived in Antartica, smaller ships have also made the journey."

There has been an argument between me and my friends. Some of my friends said it is false, and the other ones, including me choose "not given". I find that the content of this statement is really confusing. Actually, this is one of the questions in an ielts practising book that I am using to improve my reading skills because I am going to take the ielts exam in December. Therefore, I hope that someone could help me explain this task. Thank you in advance.

Top answer

" There was no ship smaller than the one Shirase sailed in that came at an earlier time. " The original statement only talks about Shirase and the time before his journey. It says nothing at all about what happened afterwards.

  • " There was no ship smaller than the one Shirase sailed in that came at an earlier time.
  • " The original statement only talks about Shirase and the time before his journey.
  • It says nothing at all about what happened afterwards.
  • So the truth value of the statement is indeterminate.
