Nowadays, more and more people are having consumer goods like refrigerators and washing machines. Does this development bring more advantages than disadvantages?

It is a fact that more families these days have electronic household items such as washing machines, refrigerators than ever before. This trend has some pros and cons, but I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

On the one hand, the use of appliances in such high quantity brings with it higher energy consumption that probably leads to higher environmental pollution all over the world. As the energies used to run any electronic appliance are mostly non-renewable resources of energy such as coal, fossil fuels that harm our environment. Moreover, these devices might have some negative effects on the human body. For example, the usage of the microwave oven has triggered serious diseases such as tumors and cancer.

On the other hand, another group of people believes that it is a good trend because they think that these devices could help them save time when they are all ears. Because of people’s busy lifestyles, they have less time to do their household activities. For instance, time spent in preparation of food, washing or ironing of clothes, is far less these days than it used to be in the past. Just a hundred years ago, it was unimaginable that you could keep the meats and other items for months or clean a large number of dishes in less than 10 minutes. However, thanks to new technologies. they turn out to be possible.

In conclusion, although the usage of electronic devices has some negative impacts on the environment, I suppose that its merits outrival its demerits as these appliances are time-saving.
