“Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country” this saying stimulates us, the Vietnamese young. The history of Vietnam is a long history of struggle. In the past, many Vietnamese generations sacrificed their lives for independence and now the Vietnamese young continue a new struggle in the economic battle for the development of their country. If you are a young Vietnamese, you have to be proud of being Vietnamese and take part in this struggle.

Especially, if you was born in poverty and lived in poverty, you could understand the burning desire of being rich and being studied.

I was born in countryside and I fully understand the unique way for me to be able to get rid of the poverty is my own effort to study and to work.

During my school years, I achieved many awards in provincial contests for excellent pupils. In spite of the fact I am a countryman, I do my best to have a good academic record. After graduating, I got a scholarship from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy to study Italian language and commerce in Italy. Since my return in Vietnam, I have worked as a Marketing Executive for OVERSEA TRAVEL Co, Ltd. Working in a small and medium enterprise<SME>, I have a broad idea of what a SME needs.

I chose my research thesis called “Designing marketing strategies for SMEs in Vietnam” in order to solve a crucial issue for my Enterprise and for other SMEs in Vietnam. In particular, my thesis will focus on two main sectors considered as motive forces of the economy; tourism and exportation. I have travelled all parts of Vietnam and with a view of an economist; I could appreciate the value of tourism and exportation as two economic triggers for the development of the country. It is clear that SMEs make up a major part in these two sectors.

History has proved the vital importance of SMEs to each economy, especially to the developing one. In Vietnam, SMEs play an increasingly significant role in the economy. SMEs create employment and raising level of investment. Especially, when the economy has its transition from a high percentage of state-own sector to private and equitizied one, SMEs will be a vital momentum in raising the economic growth. Moreover, Vietnam is on its way to participate in WTO opening a new environment of many opportunities for SMEs in one level playing field. However, SMEs with their weakness of financial capability, managerial skills and marketing strategies, are facing threats from big companies.

If I can realize my thesis, it will be a great contribution to the development of SMEs and the prosperity of Vietnam. As you know, I strongly believe that my thesis is implemented in a feasible way.

During my study in the International University of Japan, I will set up a plan in which supposing that I am a marketing consultant for 10 SMEs of Vietnam. These are enterprises that intend to enter Japan’s market when Vietnam participates in WTO. Therefore, what these enterprises need to do is the purpose of my thesis.

With the desired research, I will answer the common question for many SMEs that is how to approach Japan’s market in particular and how to approach other markets. The main question will be solved with many sub questions as following:

· Conducting market research in Japan for 10 enterprises and apply to all SMEs.

· Gather information on needs and wants of the market, Japanese trade terms such as customs clearance, cost of transportation, certificate of origin, etc.

· Analyze competitors in the market.

· Supply source of information <addresses, websites, exhibitions.etc.

· Design marketing strategies for 10 SMEs.

With positive changes in business environment, Vietnam is considered as a potential market in the region. For me, working in Vietnam is always my lifetime philosophy. In spite of the fact that in Vietnam I might encounter difficulties, my life can be lack of good services and I have to live in small room without luxury conditions, but it does not mean a lack of opportunities and hope. On contrary, it is Vietnam’s market that creates fortune for me. I am confident that I can be a leader in Vietnam.

When I return in Vietnam, I continue my big ambition in my company that is to apply all knowledge of Marketing to attract more clients and to approach more markets. Tourism industry and exportation have to be improved, I reconfirm. Vietnam has to be known all over the world for its history and what it owns. The time in Japan will be an unprecedented opportunity for me not only for studying but also as a big advantage to set up new business relations in a multinational environment.

With my working experience and the best academic environment in Japan, I have a strong determination in training and consulting SMEs after my return in Vietnam. It is obvious that one becomes more and more professional if he/she know to combine teaching and practising his knowledge gained abroad. One of my strong points is communication and eloquence, therefore I will actively participate in conferences, lessons and training in order to share my knowledge gained in Japan. I consider what I will study in Japan is not only for me but also for others.

My long-term ambition is to open a marketing centre in which all modern marketing knowledge will be taught. At that time, all SMEs can access to the brain resources of our centre, and become strong enough to compete and develop.
