Hi, teachers!
This is my IELTS essay. Could you please help me check and give me some advice to improve it?
Thank you very much.
Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say that governments should spend public money on saving these languages while others believe that would be a waste of money.Discuss both these views and give your opinion.--------------------------------------------
Many countries are facing up to the fact that several uncommon languages are disappearing. Although some people think that governments should take action to prevent this reality, there are certain reasons why doing so is generally impractical in my opinion.
On the one hand, minority languages play an integral part on cultural diversity and provide knowledge on many fields of endeavor. Firstly, every particular culture has its own unique characteristics contributing to the variety of the whole culture of a country. Since language is the most basic attribute of the formation of all these features, the numbers of people using a language seriously dwindling would be the indication of a distinct culture dying. This would cause the culture to slowly lose its diversity and identity. Secondly, languages contain an accrued body of knowledge throughout their history. Therefore, they can provide insights into a wide range of areas such as medicine, science or the arts; and all of these might contribute substantially to human knowledge.
On the other hand, development is the removal and replacement process where unsuitable things will be eliminated in one way or another. This law is known to hold true for everything, and languages are no exception. Therefore, if governments tried to save a language that is one that people do not participate in, this would merely show desire to cling to the past rather than move forward. In addition, opponents of preserving endangered languages believe that these languages should only be studied for their cultural and linguistic value instead of revitalizing them; if people want to learn minority languages, it is up to them and should not be backed by government subsidies.
In conclusion, despite the fact that several obscure languages are on the brink of extinction, the idea of saving them would be unnatural and improbable since they have always vanished as time has passed.
